Join our team’s ESL program to empower women through literacy while sharing the greatest story ever told: the gospel! You will provide ESL classes to Sudanese refugees living in both the refugee settlements and in Arua, Uganda. Come prepared to take part in our close-knit team and to be discipled! There are 1.6 million South Sudanese refugees in Uganda and 75-85% of those refugees are women and children. These brave and resilient people have fled their homes and now live in a country and culture that is foreign to them. They are looking for any avenue to help them provide for their family and to give them hope. Our aim as a team is to empower people while providing the most important need of all… their spiritual need to hear that there is a God who created them, loves them, and wants to have a personal relationship with them! ESL is a great tool to be able to do both. You will be trained to teach ESL classes through an informal curriculum that will focus on scripture. Your team will have a unique opportunity to sit with these women and enter into conversation. On a surface level, you will teach phonics and conversational topics through ESL. This alone is beneficial, but if you are willing to dive in deeper, you will get to know these women on a personal level. You will hear their testimonies and provide hope through the gospel of Christ and through teaching them bible stories, all while giving them a tool through learning the English language.
